Happy Home

It has been over two months since my last post, and loads has happened since then. Well maybe that’s an exaggeration, but it really feels that way. I won’t bore you with the details, but I will say that I am slowly beginning to feel like myself again, and am once again enjoying the things I love doing rather than sitting on the couch like a lump.

Last night I did a bit of an autumn clean… And have been looking at my lovely little home with fresh eyes. As always, I have loads of ideas about what I would like to do and change, but I lack the budget to do so. So it is more about strategic re-arranging than massive overhauls.

In the spirit of beautiful homes, I wanted to share the beautiful home of Joni Lay of  Lay Baby Lay, which I spotted on The Glitter Guide.

The Best Bar Cart

For the longest time I have been dreaming about the perfect bar cart - and I think this one is pretty much it.

Pinterest, originally from Gingersnaps.

I seem to remember bar carts being quite poplar when I was little, and they seem to have become popular again in recent times. I haven't seen any in store, and spent a morning searching second hand shops for one, with no luck.

Covetable Kitchens

I live in an old flat. Generally speaking the older flats are much bigger than the more modern homes, being built to try and fit as many people into a square meter as possible.

We have a giant lounge, with ample room for our sparse furniture – it’s great – Spacious. If we decided to turn the space into a dance floor after a dinner party, it would transition with ease. Our massive room is so light and airy. The fact that we do not have a king size bed is just a waste of the space.

Despite the size of the two main living areas of the flat – I very often question the architects thinking when designing the place… Now, I don’t claim to be an expert – But the use of the space is just plain impractical.

We have a cricket pitch length bathroom, with a separate toilet that one needs to straddle in order to close the door.

But the most frustrating area of the whole place – which for the record, I adore, really – is the kitchen. It is tiny, and one of the most impractical rooms in the whole flat. It is the epitome of wasted space.  I love spending time in the kitchen, cooking and baking - so it is such a shame that the smallest room in our home is the kitchen… None the less, I make do – occasionally feeling overwhelmed, piping hot dish in hand, no counter space, shouting profanities after bashing my shin while shimmying between an open oven and poorly positioned island.

So you can imagine the rich shade of emerald I turned when I gazed upon these beautiful little kitchens (here). So cleverly optimizing even the smallest spaces.

Such gorgeous, practical ideas.

Copper

I enjoy reading various interior magazines and decor books for inspiration and ideas on decorating. Lately I have noticed that copper accents are quite on trend at the moment. I imagine it would be quite a mission to keep it clean and shiny, but I love the way that it brings warmth to a room.

A House Becomes A Home

I recently moved into a new flat, well the flat itself is not new, just me being in it…

Unpacking boxes has been reminiscent of the lucky packets I used to get when I was little – the fun of discovering something awesome that I had completely forgotten about as well as finding a few duds all wrapped up in bubble wrap and paper.

At a stage I was overwhelmed  by the amount of stuff I have - vowing never again to buy another knick or acquire another knack. Ultimately, coming to the realisation that most of these things are not necessary objects - Things I could certainly do without.

That being said, I do believe that a lot of these things have turned my house into a home, and as much as they are not necessary for my survival - and would probably not be packed into a stylish rucksack (oxymoron?) come the apocalypse, they are all an extension of my personality and therefore a very necessary part of the character of my flat.

Fabulous Fireplaces

Since we are experiencing a particularly mild winter this year, fireplaces needn't be functional at all. Instead they can be used as a gorgeous focal point, or purely for display purposes.

Burgundy Barn

This amazing barn conversion in Burgundy, France, by Joséphine Gintzburger makes me swoon! Concrete flooring offset by the warmth of wooden beams and furniture. Modern art juxtaposed with antique chandeliers...
